Explaining a concept

PSYCHIATRY

Montrose Health Group provides thorough psychiatric assessments to help identify and understand mental health concerns. Each assessment involves a detailed discussion of symptoms, personal history, and relevant medical background, alongside standardised questionnaires where appropriate.

This process enables accurate diagnosis of conditions such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, and other mood or behavioural disorders. The outcome includes a clear diagnostic report, personalised recommendations, and, if needed, a treatment plan tailored to each patient’s needs. Assessments are available both in person at the Sheffield clinic and online across the UK.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT)

Montrose Health Group offers Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), a structured talking therapy designed to help people recognise the links between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. CBT is based on the idea that unhelpful thinking patterns can contribute to emotional distress and negative behaviours, and that by identifying and challenging these patterns, individuals can develop more balanced ways of thinking and healthier responses to life’s challenges.

Delivered by experienced and fully qualified therapists, CBT is an evidence-based approach proven to help with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, and low self-esteem. Sessions are collaborative, goal-focused, and practical, providing tools and strategies that can be applied in everyday situations.

Each programme is tailored to the individual’s needs, empowering them to improve their mental wellbeing and sustain positive changes. Therapy is available both in person at our Sheffield clinic and online, ensuring flexible, confidential support across the UK.

ART PSYCHOTHERAPY

Those who find words challenging, or don’t use speech to communicate, art making and images offer a non-verbal language to communicate our experiences. An image can show someone else how you see the world, and how your perspective is different from theirs.

In art therapy, someone with ADHD, can feel stimulated by creating art or playing with the materials. This produces high levels of dopamine. Increased dopamine levels improve concentration. Expressing creativity through art also elevates serotonin and reduces stress levels. Within ADHD, executive functioning skills can be impaired: planning and organising, multitasking, managing time, problem solving, emotional regulation, analysing and processing information, concentrating, controlling mental focus, self-motivation and inhibition.

Each time we put a brush to paper we are engaged in problem solving and decision-making. This stimulates neuro pathways and activates different parts of the brain. So when you’re expressing creativity you are promoting problem solving skills, increasing attention span and boosting your working memory.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Create a shared understanding through a formulation roadmap by exploring the difficulties the client has faced in the past, is currently experiencing in the present, and may encounter in the future. This process helps bring together a clearer picture of the client's physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges—many of which may be rooted in trauma.

Through this shared understanding, we can begin the process of healing by focusing on emotional processing, validation, and cognitive restructuring. We support the client in building coping skills, establishing trust, regulating the nervous system, and ultimately creating a new, empowering narrative.

INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS (IFS)

An evidence-based model of psychotherapy, IFS takes a non-pathologizing approach, seeing the person as a whole and understanding that we are made up of many inner parts. Founded by Dr. Richard Schwartz, it is based on the idea of the multiplicity of the mind.

IFS helps people heal by connecting with their protective and wounded parts. It supports individuals in building inner and outer connection by first helping them access their core Self—the calm, compassionate center within. From that place, people can begin to understand their parts and help them heal and unburden.

IFS is transformative because it takes the whole person into account, not just symptoms or behaviors. It offers a powerful path to healing through inner connection, compassion, and self-leadership.

PSYCHOLOGY

Montrose Health Group provides comprehensive psychological assessments and support to help explore, understand, and address a wide range of mental health and emotional wellbeing concerns.

Psychology focuses on understanding how people think, feel, and behave, and how these factors influence everyday life. Our approach combines clinical expertise with evidence-based methods to help clients gain insight into their experiences and develop effective coping strategies.

Each assessment involves an in-depth discussion of current challenges, personal history, and relevant life experiences, alongside the use of standardised psychological questionnaires where appropriate.

This process helps to build a clear picture of the factors affecting wellbeing and guides tailored recommendations for therapy or other interventions. The outcome includes a detailed written report, personalised strategies for improvement, and, where beneficial, a structured treatment plan designed around each client’s unique goals.

Assessments are available both in person at our Sheffield clinic, integrated into our residential retreats, and online for clients across the UK and internationally.

HUMANISTIC COUNSELLING

Humanistic counselling is founded on the belief that every person has the potential for growth, self-understanding, and positive change. It focuses on the whole individual rather than just specific problems, emphasising empathy, authenticity, and the quality of the therapeutic relationship. This approach provides a safe, non-judgmental space for clients to explore their feelings, gain clarity about what matters most to them, and develop greater self-awareness.

The benefits of humanistic counselling include improved self-esteem, stronger emotional resilience, and a deeper sense of personal empowerment. It can help individuals navigate challenges such as anxiety, depression, low confidence, and major life transitions.

At Montrose Health Group, sessions are collaborative and client-led, designed to help each person identify their goals, discover their strengths, and create meaningful, lasting change in their lives.

SYSTEMIC FAMILY THERAPY

Systemic Family Psychotherapy plays a vital role in supporting individuals recovering from addiction or mental health challenges, while also helping families navigate complex dynamics and intergenerational conflict. Systemic Family Psychotherapy invites pause and reflections to support individuals, couples and families through life transitions. It can grow wellness, emotional intelligence, stronger connections, reduce conflict and the emotional distance needed to foster the desired sense of unity. We can create a safe space to address underlying emotions and improve communication. Families can feel better able to lead their family to make decisions and navigate life's challenges.
