Role Purpose
The ADHD Prescriber is responsible for the safe initiation, titration, and ongoing prescribing of ADHD medication for children aged 7+, young people, and adults, following robust diagnostic assessment and MDT agreement. The role ensures prescribing is delivered in line with NICE NG87, CQC standards, and NHS expectations, including Right to Choose pathways and Shared Care arrangements with GPs.
Key Responsibilities
Prescribing & Medication Management
• Initiate ADHD medication following:
o Completed diagnostic assessment
o MDT discussion and agreement
• Prescribe and manage ADHD medications including (where clinically appropriate):
o Methylphenidate preparations
o Lisdexamfetamine
o Dexamfetamine
o Atomoxetine
o Guanfacine
• Undertake structured medication titration, including:
o Dose optimisation
o Monitoring response and side effects
o Reviewing physical health parameters
• Issue:
o FP10 prescriptions
o Prescriptions via approved electronic pharmacy systems
• Manage repeat prescriptions once patients are stabilised and clinically appropriate
Monitoring & Review
• Conduct medication reviews in line with NICE guidance, including:
o Titration reviews
o Post-stabilisation reviews
o 6-monthly and annual reviews
• Review physical health monitoring data (e.g. BP, pulse, weight, height where applicable)
• Identify and manage adverse effects, contraindications, and medication interactions
• Make timely clinical decisions regarding continuation, adjustment, or cessation of medication
MDT & Clinical Governance
• Participate in:
o Monthly prescribing MDT meetings
o Diagnostic MDT discussions where required
• Provide specialist prescribing input to MDT decision-making
• Escalate complex or high-risk cases appropriately
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activity
• Work within Montrose Health Group policies, SOPs, and Controlled Drugs procedures
Shared Care & External Liaison
• Draft and issue Shared Care Agreements in line with:
o NICE guidance
o Local and national NHS expectations
• Liaise with:
o GPs
o Community pharmacists
o Other healthcare professionals
• Respond to GP queries relating to ADHD medication and Shared Care
• Support smooth transition of care from specialist service to primary care where appropriate
Documentation & Professional Practice
• Maintain clear, accurate, and timely clinical records
• Produce high-quality clinic letters and prescribing summaries for:
o GPs
o Patients and families
• Ensure compliance with:
o Consent and capacity frameworks
o Safeguarding procedures
o Data protection and confidentiality requirements
• Work within professional scope of practice and revalidation requirements
Professional Requirements
Essential
• GMC registration (for doctors) or
NMC / HCPC registration with Independent Prescribing qualification
• Minimum of 1 year experience prescribing ADHD medication
• Strong working knowledge of:
o NICE NG87
o ADHD medication pathways
o Shared Care arrangements
• Experience of:
o Titration and ongoing medication management
o Issuing FP10 prescriptions
o Using electronic prescribing / pharmacy systems
• Ability to work effectively in a hybrid / remote model
• Excellent clinical judgement and communication skills
Desirable
• Experience working within:
o Right to Choose ADHD services
o NHS or CQC-registered services
• Experience prescribing for:
o Children and young people
o Adults with late-diagnosed ADHD
• Experience managing co-occurring conditions (e.g. ASD, anxiety)
• Experience contributing to service development or policy writing
