Why people choose a private autism assessment
People come to us for a private autism assessment for many reasons. Some parents are concerned about their child’s behaviour, communication or sensory profile. Some adults have spent years feeling different, overwhelmed or exhausted, but have never had a clear explanation why.
You may be noticing possible autism signs such as:
-
difficulties in social situations
-
sensory sensitivities
-
feeling overwhelmed by noise, change or busy environments
-
rigid routines or distress around disruption
-
restricted eating
-
masking in social or professional settings
-
feeling depleted after prolonged stress or social pressure
-
signs of autistic burnout
For some adults, especially those who may have been missed earlier in life, seeking an assessment can be the first step towards finally understanding their own experience. This is often especially relevant in conversations around adult autism, where people may have learned to cope outwardly while struggling inwardly for years.
Why an autism diagnosis can matter
At Montrose, we understand that the difference between wondering and knowing can be significant.
An autism diagnosis can help you:
-
better understand your needs, patterns and strengths
-
make sense of challenges at home, at work or in education
-
reduce self-blame and increase self-understanding
-
support conversations with family members or loved ones
-
explore reasonable adjustments at work where appropriate
-
access clearer next steps and tailored support
For many people, diagnosis brings relief as well as clarity. It can help you move forward in a way that is more informed, more compassionate and more sustainable.
Our private autism assessment pathway
At Montrose, our team offer gold-standard care are we have worked hard to make the process as straightforward and supportive as possible.
1. Initial triage
Your journey begins with a 40-minute video call with a specialist psychologist. This gives us the opportunity to understand your concerns and advise on the most appropriate next steps.
2. Pre-assessment forms
We then send out the relevant forms and background questionnaires so we can build a fuller picture before the assessment takes place.
3. Full assessment
We offer autism assessments for both adults and children. Depending on your needs and location, appointments may take place in person at our Sheffield practice or online.
4. Diagnostic report and feedback
Following assessment, we prepare a detailed report with diagnostic findings, clinical insight and recommendations.
5. Follow-up support
Where needed, we can also provide follow-up appointments and discuss the most appropriate next steps after assessment.
Private autism assessments for adults and children
At Montrose, we offer separate pathways for adult autism and child autism assessments.
Adult autism assessments
Our adult pathway is designed for people who want to understand themselves more clearly. Many adults come to us after years of masking, struggling in social environments, feeling dysregulated, or questioning whether autism may explain long-standing patterns in their life.
A private adult autism assessment can help you make sense of your experience and better understand what support, structure or adjustments may help you moving forward.
Child autism assessments
We also support parents who are concerned about their child. You may have noticed social differences, sensory issues, restricted routines, or patterns of play and behaviour that feel outside what you expected.
Our child pathway involves more detailed background gathering, including information from parents, carers and school where appropriate, so we can build the clearest possible picture.
